The Bread and The Wine

“Now as thy were eating,Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘take eat; this is my body.’ And he took cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” Matt.26:27,28 ESV

I would like to speak to those of you who currently call yourself a Christian but for one reason or another quit going to church, have quit reading the Bible, and have quit praying.

Im not going to chide you or prod you into getting back in the saddle so to speak. You have backsliden, okay so have I in the past. I am not a stranger to living in a backsliden state. But what can you do about it?

I have a suggestion, it is a simple one. Ask yourself, when was the last time you have taken communion? Years? I know this might sound corny or maybe useless but why don’t you go to church somewhere and take the Lord’s supper? That’s it, just do that and see if something happens, maybe something will happen, I don’t know.

This I do know, taking communion is a spiritual event, it is something we are commanded to do, and there is something that happens to us when we take it. What exactly I don’t know but it is something and for you to take the time and effort to take communion is something. So maybe, perhaps, hopefully, God will honor your feeble effort and do something special in your life. It is worth a try, it is better then nothing and who knows maybe it will be a start of your recovery.

Recently I have prayed to the Lord, “I want to be born again, again.” For some of us that is exactly what we need, we need a new born again experience. I know I did, I didn’t feel any different than when I was not a Christian maybe even worse. I fell into sin in a terrible way. Quit going to church, stopped praying and reading the Bible. I am not sure we can get a new born again experience but I do know we can come back to Him, we can once again receive forgiveness. Like the prodigal son He will take us back, will put His arms around us, hug us, kiss us. He will make His face shine on us once again, speak kindly to us and take us into His inner circle and “sup” with us again.

After all, that is the meaning of the bread and the wine, it symbolizes us, “eating his flesh and drinking his blood” and what does that mean? I means fellowship, fellowship at a deep spiritual, God and man level. Our spirits “feed” on Him. Remember Jesus saying I am the bread of heaven and I am the living water?

So yeah, why not give it a try? Go to church somewhere, attend the service and take holy communion, if they didn’t have it that week then go again the next week so you can be sure you took it. Then see what happens, why not try it, you got nothing to lose. You got everything to gain.

May the Lord bless you and keep you, may he make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you, may he lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.
